Every immigration application starts with choosing the right route. Some people qualify under more than one, and the choice affects the cost plus how long it takes to settle and what you can do while you’re here. Then comes the evidence, which has to match the rules exactly. Even a small gap can lead to a refusal.
Next, you apply online, pay the Home Office fee and give your fingerprints and photo. The Home Office aims to decide most visit, work and study visas from outside the UK within three weeks, and partner visas within 12. Most work and partner applications inside the UK take around eight weeks, while settlement and citizenship take longer. Check the latest visa processing times on GOV.UK. For many routes, you can pay for a faster decision.
If you’re approved, your visa is held online as an eVisa, which you use to prove your status. We’ll explain what comes next, from extensions to settlement and British citizenship.
The Home Office charges a fee for each application, and the amount depends on the route. It’s set by the government and paid to them, not to us. A partner visa from outside the UK is currently £2,064, indefinite leave to remain is £3,226 and naturalisation as a British citizen is £1,709, plus £130 for the citizenship ceremony. You can check every current figure in the Home Office fees table.
Most longer visas also carry the Immigration Health Surcharge. It’s £1,035 a year for most adults and £776 for students and children, paid upfront for the whole visa. Employers pay separate sponsor licence fees and the Immigration Skills Charge for each worker they sponsor.
Our legal fees are agreed before we start. You’ll understand what’s included and what the Home Office will charge on top, plus how long it’s likely to take. If anything changes, we’ll explain why and agree it with you before extra work starts.
Costs rise when a case is complicated, including gaps in your evidence, a criminal record or an appeal. Our fees page gives a guide to our charges, and our sponsor licence costs guide breaks down what employers pay. A free video consultation is the best way to get a realistic figure for your situation.

Most refusals come down to how the application was put together. Common problems include choosing the wrong route, missing documents, financial evidence that doesn’t meet the rules, unexplained gaps in your immigration history and answers that don’t match the evidence.
Employers face the same risk. Sponsor licence applications are often refused because right to work checks or HR systems fall short, or supporting documents are incomplete. We can audit your HR systems and paperwork before you apply.
A refusal costs more than time. The fee isn’t usually refunded and the refusal must be declared on future applications. That’s why we check every form and document carefully before submitting anything. If you’ve been refused, our visa refusal solicitors can review the decision and explain your options.

A refusal letter can feel final, but quite often it isn’t. Depending on the decision, you might be able to ask for an administrative review, appeal to the tribunal or apply for judicial review. Deadlines are short though. Most reviews and appeals must be lodged within 14 days if you’re in the UK, so speak to us as soon as the decision arrives.
Applying before your current permission runs out usually protects your right to stay while the Home Office decides, so apply in good time. If the date has already passed, don’t wait. Overstaying can affect future applications. We can explain your options and help you put things right as quickly as possible.
A compliance visit, suspension or revocation puts your business and your sponsored workers at risk. We can prepare you for a Home Office visit or respond to a suspension within the deadline and help you fix the problems behind it. Read more about our sponsor licence suspension and revocation support.
The government has proposed making 10 years the standard route to indefinite leave to remain. It isn’t law yet, and the current five-year route still applies. English requirements are rising too. New Skilled Worker applicants have needed B2 English since January 2026. Read our guide to earned settlement or ask us how the changes could affect you.

Not always. You can apply yourself through GOV.UK. But the rules are detailed and the evidence has to be exactly right. A solicitor helps you choose the right route and avoid mistakes that lead to a refusal. They can also protect your position if something goes wrong. If you have a complicated immigration history or are sponsoring workers, early advice is especially worth having.
Immigration solicitors are qualified lawyers regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Advisers who aren’t solicitors are regulated by the Immigration Advice Authority (formerly the OISC), and their level of registration limits the work they can do. As solicitors, we can advise and act at every stage, from your first application to appeals and judicial review.
The Home Office fee for a partner visa is £2,064 from outside the UK or £1,407 from inside. On top of that is the Immigration Health Surcharge, £1,035 for each year of the visa. You normally need a combined income of at least £29,000 a year, or savings that make up the shortfall. Our legal fees are agreed separately before we start.
On most work and family routes, you can currently apply after five years in the UK. The government has proposed a 10-year standard qualifying period, with shorter routes for some people, but this isn’t law yet. Our guide to earned settlement explains the proposals, and we can tell you how they might affect your plans.
Start with the refusal letter. It tells you whether you can ask for an administrative review, appeal to the tribunal or neither. Time limits are short, usually 14 days if you’re in the UK and 28 days if you’re outside. If there’s no right of review or appeal, a fresh application or judicial review may be possible. Speak to us as soon as you receive the decision.
