If you’re currently in the UK on a Skilled Worker visa and considering a job move, it’s essential to understand what changing your employer involves. The Skilled Worker visa is tied to your sponsor, which means you can’t freely switch jobs without going through a formal update process with the Home Office.
In this guide, we explain when you need to apply for a new visa, what the process involves and what to consider before changing your visa sponsor.
When do you need to change your visa?
You must update your visa if you are switching to a new employer, even if you are remaining in the same industry or job type. You’ll also need to apply for a new visa if your job changes to a different occupation code or if you’re moving from a shortage occupation to one that is not on the list.
Importantly, you cannot start working for your new employer until your updated visa has been approved. Continuing to work without the correct permission could lead to your visa being cancelled and potentially impact future immigration applications.
Can any employer sponsor you?
No – not all UK companies are approved to sponsor foreign workers. Your new employer must be a licensed sponsor listed on the official register. They must issue you a new Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), which is required to support your Skilled Worker visa application. The job must also meet eligibility criteria regarding salary level and skill requirements.
If you’re considering a job offer, make sure your prospective employer has a valid sponsor licence. Otherwise, you won’t be able to switch your visa and may risk losing your legal right to stay in the UK.
What is the process for changing your sponsor?
Once you’ve secured a job with a licensed sponsor, the next step is to apply to update your Skilled Worker visa. This involves submitting a new visa application with details of your new employer and job role. You’ll need to provide your new CoS, proof of identity and any supporting documentation required under the Skilled Worker route.
The Home Office will assess whether the new role meets all the visa conditions. If approved, you’ll be issued with an updated visa reflecting your new sponsor. You must not start work until this is confirmed.
Can you switch while in the UK?
Yes, most Skilled Worker visa holders can apply to change their sponsor from within the UK. This is known as “switching” your visa. However, you must still follow the official application process and receive a decision before working in your new role.
It’s also important to note that if your current visa is due to expire, you must apply before the deadline. Allow plenty of time, as it can take several weeks for your new visa to be processed.

What happens to your dependants?
If you’re changing visa sponsors, your dependants (partner and children) can usually remain in the UK under their existing visas. Their immigration status is tied to yours, not your employer – so as long as you continue to hold a valid Skilled Worker visa, they don’t need to reapply.
However, if your visa expires or is curtailed for any reason, this may affect your dependants too. If in doubt, it’s always worth speaking to a solicitor to ensure your entire family’s immigration status remains secure.
Does changing your sponsor affect ILR?
One common concern is whether switching employers will affect your eligibility for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after five years. The good news is that as long as you remain on a Skilled Worker visa, time spent under different sponsors still counts toward the five-year ILR requirement (or ten-year requirement from 2025).
The key is maintaining lawful continuous residence and complying with the terms of your visa. If you take a long break between jobs or there is a period where you are no longer sponsored, this could break your qualifying period.
Make sure you plan the transition carefully and apply for your new visa in good time to avoid any interruptions.
